Cedar Shingles, Cedar Shakes

Cedar Roof ShinglesChoose a cedar roof if you want a more natural look for your home. When compared to asphalt shingles, cedar roofs are a great choice. These cedar shingles last close to 20-25 years,  the life span of many asphalt shingles. Their price is generally higher but the beauty of a cedar roof is second to none.

A shake is a basic wooden shingle that is made from split logs. Shakes have traditionally been used for roofing and siding applications around the world. Higher grade shakes are typically used for roofing purposes, while the lower grades are used for siding purposes. In either situation, properly installed shakes provide long lasting weather protection and a rustic aesthetic, though they require more maintenance than some other more modern weatherproofing systems. The term shake is sometimes used as a colloquialism for all wood shingles, though shingles are sawn rather than split. In North America shakes are typically made from Western Red Cedar.

There are various types of shakes, the main differentiating feature between shakes and other types of shingles is that shakes are split while most shingles are sawn on all sides. The sizes also vary from country to country; in North America shakes are usually made in 16,18 and 24-inch lengths.

You have many options if you are thinking of replacing your home’s roof with cedar, our recommendation is : Certi- Grade Number 1 Blue Label® – The premium grade of shingles for roofs and sidewalls. These top-grade shingles are 100% heartwood, 100% clear and 100% edge grain. Available in 16″ or 18″ or 24″ lengths. Certi-Split® Hand-Split Shakes – These shakes have split faces and sawn backs. Cedar logs are first cut into desired lengths. Blanks or boards of proper thickness are split and then run diagonally through a band saw to produce two tapered shakes from each blank. Available in Premium Grade (100% edge grain) or Number 1 Grade (Up to 20% flat grain allowed in each bundle). While the initial cost might be slightly more, the longevity over inferior grades will more than make up the cost.

We’ve helped homeowners in Kentlands,  Potomac and Avenel maintain and replace their cedar roofs according to homeowner’s association guidelines.
